    Program Objectives

    This 8 quarter hour (180 clock hours) program is designed and developed to prepare students for entry-level employment as nursing assistants in healthcare facilities. The curriculum is also developed to prepare graduates for the State of Florida Nursing Assistant Certification Examination.

     

    Program Description

    The Nursing Assistant Diploma program provides an intensive course of study in patient care techniques for the nursing assistant. The Nursing Assistant program includes instruction and learning areas for nursing assistant skills, elements of nutrition, and basic skills related to nursing assistant duties including

    • Vital signs
    • Transferring to bed  - chair - wheelchair
    • Turn and reposition patient
    • Body mechanics and alignment
    • Delivery systems for health care
    • Medical records services and charting
    • Legal and ethical concerns
    • Employability skills

     

    Upon completion of the Nursing Assistant program students will be able to:

    • Use basic math and science skills 
    • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication 
    • Explain job related legal and ethical responsibilities 
    • Provide basic and emergency care 
    • Explain basic human anatomy and physiology 
    • Perform physical comfort and safety functions 
    • Provide personal patient care 
    • Perform basic nursing procedures 
    • Use basic principles of nutrition in meal preparation 
    • Provide care for geriatric patients 
    • Apply the principles of infection control 
    • Provide biological, psychological, and social support 
    • Perform organizational skills, following the patient plan of care 
    • Assist with restorative (rehabilitative) activities 
    • Demonstrate employability skills 
    • Demonstrate knowledge of blood borne diseases, including AIDS

     

    Entrance Requirements

    Applicants must meet the following requirements

    • Be at least 17 years and 11 months of age
    • Have signed permission from a parent or guardian if under the age of 18 
    • Have a high school diploma, GED, or can successfully pass a basic skills test with a minimum verbal score of 70% and minimum math score of 70% 
    • Participate in a personal interview with a Career Learning Institute Admissions Representative
    • Submit a signed enrollment agreement 
    • Submit a medical report attesting to good health. This report may be used when applying for Home Health Aide positions. There may be a fee for this report. 
    • Complete an approved 4-Hour AIDS seminar (provided by Awareness Through Education Inc. - Florida Board of Nursing Provider #3085)
    • Complete a CPR certification (provided onsite by an American Heart Association certified instructor)
